Our own compounding unit is one year old

17th February 2021

Our own compounding unit is one year old. The unit prepares bespoke chemotherapy doses on a named patient basis so they can receive their treatment at home. Having our own state-of-the-art unit means we are self-sufficient and can support patients with access to medicines.

Sixteen colleagues, including an Accountable Pharmacist, supervisors, technicians, operators and assistants work at the unit. James, our accountable pharmacist who joined HaH in October 2019 to set up and manage the unit, said “We produce Cytotoxic chemotherapy doses (drugs which disrupt the way cancer cells grow and divide) and monoclonal antibodies (proteins that mimic the immune system’s ability to fight off harmful viruses) for cancer patients. “Compounded products take between 1.5 and two hours to make some of which have short shelf lives, from 24 hours to 28 days. “The medicines go exclusively to our nurses nationwide, who then treat patients in their own homes.
